UPDATE: See our latest article on the progress of the boat fund!
Dear SDSU Crew Alumni, Supporter or Family Member,
Ten years ago, a passionate group of SDSU rowing alumni felt the time was right to create an alumni association allowing former rowers, supporters and family members to work together, giving more SDSU students the opportunity to compete for the Aztec Crew. Since its inception, the Foundation has had 5 different Presidents, who rowed across 3 different decades, and participation from members who have not raced in the SDSU colors in over 55 years!
We have been fortunate to work with some amazing alumni over the last decade who have helped get the Foundation started. With generous donations from our supporters, we have been able to outfit the team with many “cox-boxes” (electronic microphones so the rowers can hear the coxswain), new seats, and even several racing shells! These generous donations have allowed the team to steadily grow in numbers and competitiveness over the past few years.
Now it’s time for the Foundation to take the next step to support the team. We need to find a way to help the team stay current with the equipment in the boathouse. The current board of directors is challenging our membership to provide an eight man shell to the team during the 2018-2019 season. A brand new racing shell costs over $35,000 to purchase and equip, and we are grateful that several alumni have already accepted the challenge with some generous donations!
In addition to providing one new shell in the coming year, we are working toward a long term plan that allows us to fund updated equipment every few years going forward. The best way to do this is to grow the active members of the Foundation, and have everyone kick in a small amount of money to support big causes for the team. The easiest way to support this cause is to become a member of the Foundation (a minimum of $25/year) and help spread the word of this goal with your fellow alumni. The Foundation is covered under a 501(c)3, so your donation is tax deductible. http://beekleyrowing.org/beekley/donate/
The team has continued to perform at a level that keeps them eligible for some funding through the university sports clubs department. However, the reality is, these funds are only enough to help them offset a small portion of their annual operating expenses, leaving the team to continue fundraising the majority of the money that is necessary to pay for coaching, travel, racing, and the boathouse. Let’s do our part to keep the team in relevant equipment and give the current Aztec rowers the opportunity to compete and win!
