Summer is usually a relatively calm and quiet time of year for Aztec Crew, but this year there is quite a bit happening. Last month Coach Craig Doan let us and the team know that he was resigning as Head Coach for the program to pursue other opportunities. Craig took over as Head Coach back in the fall of 2019, after having coached the novice program since 2016. Unfortunately, his first season at the helm was met head-on with an unbelievable challenge that nobody expected.. COVID. Even though the team couldn’t officially gather for over a year, Craig kept the team connected virtually and worked with them and the university to pick up the pieces and get back on the water after they got the green light. Since then he and the officers had been working to rebuild, and he’s leaving the program with a good core of returning athletes and leaders, primed for the next coach.
While the team and Associated Students are in process of interviewing for a new head coach, our very own alumni Bernard Aparicio and Allan Miller have been helping the team get ready to start the Fall, with Bernard volunteering to take on the role of Interim Head Coach.
Boathouse Prep Day – Sunday 8/18!
In an effort to get things ready for the return of the students and the official start of the Fall later this month, Bernard and Allan are asking for some alumni help at the boathouse on Sunday August 18th from 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM. At this point they know they’ll need extra hands to help move boats around, do a bunch of rigging and assessing, and likely do a bit of cleaning. There are only a handful of local team members, so please consider heading down to help get the boats seaworthy and exchange stories with other alumni! You can just show up, but they’d really love to know how many are coming for planning purposes. So, RSVP to Allan via email if you’d like to help or have any questions!
